While discussing Gurmat Sangeet, it has been shown that the association of the Sikhs with music has been there right from the beginning of the Sikh religion. It is not only the Gurmat sangeet wherein Sikhs have excelled, they have also shown their prominence in other kinds of music. So far classical music is concerned, Patiala Gharana was promoted by Maharaja Narinder Singh, who was himself a great love of classical music. Th is Gharana further fl ourished during the reign of Maharaja Rajinder Singh. One of the Patiala Prince Mrigender Singh was himself a noted musician. Even today, there are classical singers present in Patiala including in music and other faculties Punjabi University, Patiala. In classical music Singh Bandhus have also earned a name. Th ey are among the best classical singers of the present age. In the fi eld of light music also, we had many prominent singers in the 60s and the 70s of the last century. Surinder Kaur the known as the nightingale of Punjab, her sister Parkash Kaur, Jagjeet Kaur, Gurmeet Bawa, Asa Singh Mastana, and Hazara Singh Ramta were some of the prominent singers of those times. In the recent times when fast and pop music became popular, many Sikhs came forward with this kind of singing also. Th ey include Malkiat Singh, Daler Mehndi, Daljit Singh Dosanjh etc. We have selected some role-models singers from the fi lm industry and also outside the industry who can sing diff erent kinds of songs. Th eir popularity as singers have made the Sikh identity familiar to the people all over the world. So far dancing is concerned, some people think that Sikh religion does not approve of it. It is not so. Sikh religion does not consider dancing as a ritual for getting nearness to God. However, if one sings and dances for the happiness of self or others, there is nothing bad in it. It has its cultural value and in this sphere also, the Sikhs are not legging behind. Th e most famous cultural dances of the Sikhs have been Bhangra and Giddha. When rock-n-roll had become popular all over the world. One S. Jaspal Singh was considered as the king of rock-n-roll. He appeared to show his performance in a fi lm named "Ek Phool Chaar Kante". Since then the Sikhs having settled in most of the western countries, have always been keen to learn number of western dances.
