Those who adopt the film medium for spreading information regarding Sikhs,
their Gurus, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, their culture, language and heritage.
It is true that Kirtan (singing devotional hymns from Gurbani) and Katha (spiritual discourses), are
prominent sources of connecting the people to their religion and the teachings of their Masters. But, in present
age, the Sikhs who feel strongly for their religion, have discovered many new methods of familiarizing the
people with our religious and cultural heritage. Media being the most prominent method for this purpose,
they have started making fi lms on Sikh religion or Sikh related subjects. For example, in the recent past Harry
Baweja has made two fi lms on Sahibzade, the second being part two, sequel to the fi rst. Th ese fi lms became
very popular and the people from all communities and religions found them interesting and with valuable
information regarding the sacrifi ces of not only Sahibzadas, but also other prominent Sikhs like Baba Banda
Singh Bahadur. Harry Baweja is of the view that many animations fi lms can be made on subjects related to
Sikh history. It is also learnt that in near future more than one person are planning to make a fi lm on the
unique battle of ‘Saragarhi’. Th e subject of Sikh participation in the World wars is also being considered
for making fi lms. Th ere are many persons who are making short fi lms of 5 to 15 minutes which give a very
useful message to clarify the Sikh concept of Sewa and Sarbat da Bhala (service and welfare of mankind).
For example, S. Gunveen Singh is one such Sikh youth who is a producer, Director, Choreographer and also
an actor of short fi lms on Sikhism. Many of his fi lms can be seen on facebook (e.g. Pachhtava). S. Harmeet
Singh, another talented Sikh youth photographer also associates with Gunveen in this fi lmmaking task. S.
Anurag Singh is a documentary fi lmmaker known for his socio-political human rights oriented fi lms. Some
other such fi lmmakers, who have made feature fi lms, animation fi lms, documentaries and short fi lms on
Sikh religion have been identifi ed by us and presented as role models for this category.
