Sikhs in Business
Sikhs are considered as one of the most enterprising communities in the world. Th ey are so mobile that
they can establish their trade, business or profession anywhere. Th at is the reason that no Sikh living outside
Punjab, is a poor man. Th ey believe in hard work and have also the faith that by dint of their hard work they
can earn as much as they like. Th ere are Sikhs amongst the top industrialists of the country. Th e names of
S. Raunak Singh, S. Onkar Singh Kanwar (of Apollo Tyres), Bhai Mohan Singh of Ranbaxy Group etc. may
be mentioned in this regard. Th ey have also earned a name in foreign countries and have won distinction
of being among the best entrepreneurs. Th e whole world knows the names like S. Sant Singh Chhatwal and
S. Kartar Singh Th akral from USA and Singapore respectively. Th e list of Sikh Business tycoons in India
and foreign countries is so big that it requires a full volume to describe them and their business. Th eir
main lines of business are agriculture, hospitality, electronics and transport. Th eir position in agriculture
has already been discussed. In Hospitality business, the Sikhs own a large number of hotels, restaurants
and Dhabas all over the world. Even in the remotest corners of India and some foreign countries, eating
places owned by the Sikhs can be seen. In electronics also, they have been pioneers in manufacturing and
trading of certain electronic items like televisions, refrigerators, mobile phones etc. Th eir contribution to
the transport business is so signifi cant that all over the world they can be seen as owners of trucks, traullas,
taxies and tourist vans. Many of them start plying trucks and taxies themselves, but gradually they become
owners. Th ere are well known Sikhs dealing even in such items which are related with transport business.
Th e same include motor parts and tyres. In India as well as foreign countries they are the manufacturers of
certain auto parts (some of them are their monopoly items) and also dealers in vehicles, tyres and parts. In
other lines of business also, the Sikhs have shown their ability and obtained prosperity. Some of them fi nd
a mention in this category of role-models.
